As civilian employees of the Police Department, Communications Officers work in the 9-1-1 Communications Center and often serve as a citizen’s first point of contact with the Department. A career as a Communications Officer is challenging, interesting, and highly rewarding. You will have an opportunity to work with sworn police officers and firefighters daily in solving crisis situations, assisting citizens and fellow agency members, and ensuring that communication between citizens and units in the field flows efficiently and effectively.

Competitive salary:
The Palm Bay Police Department’s current salary range for Communications Officers is $37,128 to $61,261 annually ($17.85 - $29.45 hourly). Candidates begin at the minimum rate of $17.85 per hour and receive a 5% increase upon obtaining Public Safety Telecommunicator state certification (within one-year of employment). The City provides a .75 cent/hour shift differential for Communications Officers assigned to evening shift and a $1/hour shift differential for Communications Officers assigned to midnight shift. Communications Officers also receive an annual academic achievement incentive (if applicable) and uniform allowance.

- Paid Leave: Accrue 96 hours of vacation per year, accrued hours increase after 10 years of service based on years of service. Accrue 96 hours of sick leave per year.
- Defined Contribution Retirement Plan: City contributes a base of 3%. Employees may contribute up to 6% and the City will match the employees contribution.
- 18 years of age or older
- Graduation from High School or GED
- Possess a valid Florida Driver’s license
- Must be able to obtain a Florida 9-1-1 Public Safety Telecommunicator (PST) Certificate within 12 months of hire
- Pass a typing test with a minimum speed of 40 wpm
- Pass the Critical Personnel Selection Test
- Must be able to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and during emergencies
- Available to work 12 hour shifts as needed
